    Qualification

Nursing aides, orderlies and patient service associates assist nursing and hospital staff as well as physicians in basic patient care. They work in hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities for the elderly and other health establishments.

Tasks and functions

This group performs some or all of the following functions :

  • Measure patients' blood pressure, and take their temperature and pulse.
  • Supervise exercise routines performed by patients, organize and offer leisure activities to patients, accompany patients on recreational outings and perform other duties related to patient care and comfort.
  • Observe and monitor the condition of patients and document the care provided in patient records.
  • Serve food trays and feed patients or help them with food and choose their menu.
  • Weigh, lift, turn, or position patients.
  • Respond to calls, supply and empty bedpans, wash and dress patients and groom themselves.
  • Shave patients before surgeries.
  • Account for liquids absorbed and rejected.
  • In an emergency, administer first aid.
  • Collect specimens such as urine, faeces or sputum.
  • Administer suppositories, perform colonic irrigations and enemas, and perform other duties as directed by nursing and hospital staff.
  • Drive, in a wheelchair or on a stretcher, patients who must undergo treatment or surgery.
  • Deliver messages, reports, requisitions and samples from one department to another.
  • Make beds and keep patient rooms clean.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies.
  • Perform maintenance work as required, such as helping to set up and maintain traction equipment, washing, sterilizing, servicing or repairing equipment, erecting, setting up and operating other equipment employed.
  • Transport patients from one care facility to another as required.
