Practical nurses administer nursing care to patients, usually under the supervision of physicians, registered nurses or other members of the healthcare team. Operating room technicians prepare patients and assist medical practitioners before and during surgeries.

Practical nurses work in hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, doctors' offices, clinics, businesses, community health centers and in private homes. Operating room technicians work in hospitals.

Tasks and functions

This group performs some or all of the following functions :

  • Provide nursing services, within the limits of professional practice, to patients according to their assessment and the procedures of the care intervention plan.
  • Perform nursing interventions, for example, monitoring patients' vital signs, applying aseptic techniques including sterile dressings, infection control, controlling patient feeding and taking specimens.
  • Administer medications, observe their therapeutic effects and record the results of these observations. Administer personal care before and after surgeries and comfort patients.
  • Monitor patient progress, evaluate and document the effectiveness of nursing interventions, and collaborate with other members of the medical team.
  • Monitor ongoing respiratory therapy and intravenous therapy. Educate patients and their families on certain aspects of health and safety.
  • Prepare patients for surgery by washing, shaving and sanitizing surgical fields.
  • Prepare the instruments and equipment needed for the operation, help the surgical team put on hospital gowns and gloves, and give the surgeons the instruments requested during the operation.
  • Monitor patient status during surgery, such as absorption, elimination and blood loss, communicate and document any changes.
  • Clean and sterilize the operating room and instruments.
